- the year of bacteria

In 2017 I competed in iGEM, the world's largest competition in synthetic biology, with its origins at MIT. With a diverse student team of designer, biologist, doctors, and engineers we aimed to create a form of bacteria, that could live in the lungs and sense if the mucus gets too thick, in that case, break it down and make it normal again. This to help patients with asthma, cystic fibrosis, and COPD, because of the excessive amount of mucus in their lungs.

We designers took the challenge of bringing in new ideas, speculating in the future of genetics and bring design and communication into the life sciences.

Synthetic biology is the field of biology that involves taking an engineering approach to organisms and genetics. It works by thinking of organisms almost like computers with their own source code, or DNA that you can reprogram. In nature there are already codes for sensing lights and pressure, processes to create different molecules and do all sort of things.

It was such an interesting field to get involved in. Being part of educating the public, work with the communication of the project and the ideation process, to look further on the implications of this technology

Further down here, I have collected the different parts of the projects design elements and you can also find the scientific part here, in the wiki we create as a part of our project, PROlung - a mucus degrading lung probiotic

My role: Working mostly with our marketing, design, and branding. Was also part of the ideation process and bringing forward the future application and how it could evolve.

Team: Larsen Vornholz, Amanda Pellnäs, Achilleas Fardellas, Adele Kastensson, Gilai Nachmann, Guillermo Valenzuela Morales, Hrista Micheva, Jutta Roth, Louise Larsson, Morgan Berik Hjorth, Shanlin Tong, Sina Amoor Pour, Sonia Acosta Luis, Shivashree Dhanaraj.

My role: Working mostly with our marketing, design and identitiy to make us stick out and also comunicate the complicated subject in a more understanable way. Was also part of the ideation process and bringing together future application and how it could evolve.

Scientific poster

Posters are incredibly important when it comes to science. This is where you truly show your work. So for our trip to Boston, we created this one, highlighting our work.

Kids hack day

We collaborated with Kids hack day, on one of their events in Stockholm. We created a station where kids could extract DNA from Banana and do some basic lab stuff, but also bring home their own agar plate and watch bacteria grow.
